The 11th Annual Symposium for Primary Care Physicians and Providers

The 11th Annual Symposium for Primary Care Physicians and Providers was held Friday March 18th at the Carter Center for Health Sciences in Florence, SC. The program is designed to update participants on current approaches and innovations in multiple medical and surgical subspecialties. Hosted by Dr. William Naso of Florence Neurosurgery and Spine and Dr. Howard Farrell of Florence ENT, the annual symposium features regional experts who present current medical topics and emphasize the practical impact for primary care. The educational activity was planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and Policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the providership of the South Carolina Medical Association.

This year’s program also featured scientific poster presentations by University of South Carolina School of Medicine Florence medical students. Third year medical student Arianna Douglas (pictured below) was awarded “Best Academic Poster” for her presentation entitled “Digoxin Toxicity from Amphibian Ingestion treated with Digoxin-specific Fab Fragments: A Case Report.” Ms. Douglas reported the rare case of a patient who presented after ingesting a raw Toad. The patient developed a cardiac arrhythmia and near-fatal low heart rate caused by a toad venom toxin that mimicked the effect of a common heart medication. The full text of Ms. Douglas’s poster presentation as well as the other student scientific posters can be viewed at www.florenceneurosurgery.com
